I love historical romances! I read the first two books in this series and liked them. I liked this one as well, but it was slow to warm up for me. That was primarily due to the heroine, Lady Georgina, a beautiful but cold and manipulative debutante with a secret. She is quite difficult to take for about two thirds of the book. The hero, Colin McCrae, was mildly compelling - handsome and honorable but very bland. They had little chemistry; if you're looking for sizzle, this is definitely not the book for you. The storyline was interesting but predictable, and the religious overtones are sometimes heavy-handed. A pretty good book but very slow to warm up.

An incredibly lovely story beginning with the cover itself, the unique presentation of perspective, and the charming, clever conversations tucked between nearly every page.

Lady Georgina Hawthorne is determined that marriage to the right suitor will guard a lifelong secret, one that even her closest family and friends are totally unaware plagues her conscience. Until Colin McCrae, a dear friend of her brother-in-law, successful but not titled, feasts his eyes upon the beautiful, but rather conceited young debutante. Up until now, no one in Georgina's elite social associations has dared to probe beneath the Georgina's icy emotional veneer. Imagine her utter dismay when the handsome Scottish businessman becomes the obnoxious little voice in her head, that whispers the truth; "You don't have to protect yourself. You are safe."

On most days, Colin McCrae doesn't even want to like Georgina Hawthorne, much less nourish an attraction, but for some reason they continually cross paths. It's obvious to everyone that Colin does not meet her impossible standards for a husband, but neither can he cannot prevent himself from blocking her attempts at foolishness. And then, he sees into her heart, transforming "An Elegant Facade" into the kind of story that pulsates with tender romance while dangling over a precipice of disaster.

Enjoy every minute spent in Kristi Ann Hunter's "Hawthorne House".
4.5 Stars!!!
An Elegant Facade far exceeded my expectations! I have to be honest though, I was not really looking forward to Georgina's story. In Hunter's previous novella and novel, Georgina has been a character I did not care for, for obvious reasons. I really was not sure how Hunter was going to pull this off and cause me to care for her. Colin on the other hand is a very likable hero.

The beginning of the novel did not change my mind on these points. I am not sure it is suppose to. The first portion of the novel is from part of the same time period as Book 1 (Miranda's story), only now we view things from Georgina and Colin's perspective. While I did not love this part of the novel, it does lay down the ground work for their relationship and explain several things. Not to say that the writing is not good, because it is; Georgina just still rubbed me wrong. I am so glad I read it though and even more the last half of the book, because it was fantastic!

I absolutely loved the unfolding story of Georgina and Colin! Seeing the struggles, the heart change and so much more bear fruit, left me giddy! Do not miss out on this one! Hunter definitely knows how to tell a tale that grabs you, and characters that do not let go. I will be highly anticipating her next novel!
I have mixed feelings about rating this book; the beginning is the retelling of much of the previous book from another character's perspective. That seemed like a lot of repetition to me, but I know the author was telling a different story and she must have felt that the different perspective would give the reader a better understanding of the main characters in this book. It might have been different if I were reading this book six months or a year after the first one so I would need the reminding, but I just read the first book yesterday. In the end I loved the story so I gave it the full 5 stars.

The plot is really interesting, the writing is good, there a few editing errors but nothing that interferes with the flow of the story. I loved all the Christian elements of the story including a few quotes from the Bible. If you aren't a Christian don't let that bother you--it is just the way we Christians live. Insert the name of whatever you consider your spiritual guide and I'm sure it will mean the same to you. The point is that the h was living a life of vanity and fear and that when she was able to trust God to love her in spite of all her flaws she could finally accept the love of her family and love them in return. A good lesson for all of us.
If you haven't read Hawthorne House #1 then you'll find the book fun and interesting. Having read it though, I found myself bored and wanting to jump ahead to something new. I feel like it was an easy excuse in writing a second book to repeat the first one for nearly half the book, only adding small bits and pieces of a new story. I felt cheated somewhat in paying for half of the book as a repeat. Having said that when we finally focused on the new story it became more interesting, but just not as captivating.
