I don't even know where to start with this novel. To say I was enthralled would be an understatement. The beauty of the writing, the use of the English language in the finest way it can be used and the wonderful phrasing would be enough to recommend this book. But add a compelling and heartwrenching protaginist to a story that moves with grace, charm and wit, and you are soon drawn in.Often we call a book a "page turner" or say we "just couldn't stop reading it", but in this case it understates the need to keep reading. I read this in one day, taking it with me around the house as I tended to chores and cooked dinner. I didn't want to stop reading for even a minute and when I finished it, I went right back to the begining and re-read it.
Tollesbury is a small village in England. The kind of place that has been off the beaten path for hundreds of years. A place to grow a family and live a slower life away from the big cities. The town where Simon Gregory goes to live his adult years as battle his personal demons.
As Simon tries to cope with the ever changing emotional battle for his mental health we are privy to the intellectual battle he wages with the music he grew up with and his childhood fears. Or are we? Nothing is quite clear as the plot twists and turns with unanticipated reversals and surprising revelations. Just when you think you have Simon quite within your grasp he turns into a cunundrum within an enigma tied with a puzzle of ribon. Nothing is ever quite what it
seems to be. Is it him? Or is it us?
We often hear the term "literary fiction" and think of a book so caught up in the language that it forgets to add a plot. The plot in Tollesbury Time Forever is not lacking in anyway. It is interesting, compelling and emotionally moving. But have no doubt, this is literary fiction at it's best. I am sure this novel is going to win awards and well deserved they will be.

Tollesbury Time Forever FRUGALITY Book 1 edition by Stuart Ayris Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Such an extraordinarily good, moving and sometimes unsettling read, I'm having difficulty in marshaling my thoughts cohesively - another Reviewer's comment about needing to revert to the review once the mind had calmed down is most à propos! A beautiful reading experience, I couldn't wait each day to return to it when time permitted. A book to be read and savoured, word by word - no skipping! Powerful, poignant, and, speaking from experience extremely accurate portrayals of schizophrenic behaviours - a very emotional read for me, yet all most sensitively described. The characters are so imaginable, including and especially Simon Anthony, the main protagonist. A plot that moves constantly, most of the time in unexpected ways. A book from which one can learn, also; it left a strangely empty feeling on reaching the end, as it can leave the reader thinking, possibly about areas that may not previously have been experienced or confronted and to re-think one's own being. Stuart Ayris writes beautifully and skillfully, with a use of language and construction that keeps the reader glued to each successive page. The way in which he alternates between prose, poetry and musical quotations only adds to this. One of those reads that enthralls and one doesn't want to reach the end while acknowledging that it is unavoidable. The emotional investment was for me huge, but so worthwhile. Thank you, Stuart Ayris. This has helped me come to terms with and better understand certain aspects of my own life. Your love of the area in which the story takes place is very evident, which also adds to the book's charm. Book 2 will be downloaded very soon!
Be prepared for this novel to take you on a roller coaster of a ride! It's an amazing, poetical, whimsical gem of a book.
When Simon Anthony falls into a drunken stupor on the salt marshes near his home village of Tollesbury and tries to drown himself he is transported to an earlier, simpler time where he learns some truths about himself and how he wants to live his life. The tale is told as if in a dream or a drug induced trip with lovely lyrical writing and a sprinkling of references to rock music, particularly of the Beatles. There are some lovely scenes involving children reciting stories and poetry as well as a wonderful village cricket match. Hard to say too much more about it without giving the plot away except that it offers an alternative view of mental illness as being just another way of looking at life.
"For there is no schizophrenia and there is no depression; no bi-polar disorder, personality disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder. There is just life and trying to get through it. That is all. Look past the drugs and past the diagnosis, look deeper than the despair and higher than the highs - and what you have is a soul that needs embracing, a mind that needs cradling and a heart that needs to beat its beat without condemnation"
I will not lie. This was a tough read for me emotionally. I have people close to me that have some of the same mental illnesses and diagnosis. Some of them have done irreparable harm to me and yet I was compelled by the masterful weaving of the story to want to read more. And t masterful story the author spins- the one tat I supposedly only happening in a very sick mans mind, is so compelling and real.who are we to say that was not his reality? But then that is t w lol made point. It will make you look at schizophrenia in a whole new light. And make you reexamine how YOU look at everything! If you are brave enough to really chew on this one - this is my second read through- the first rattled my emotional baggage too much for me to want to grasp the deeper life lessons learned by our protagonist. It was well worth the second read! If you or anyone in your life has a mental illness - read this book! Please.
